As a freshman, Ricky started at quarterback for the 2003 high school varsity football team and, in the Bluffton school district, became known for his smiling face, star athletic ability, leadership, and numerous passing records. He brought excitement to Friday night football, motivated and focused his teammates to play hard while having fun, and stood out for his easygoing personality and infectious smile. He was a role model not only for his athletic accomplishments but also for the life lessons he embodied: work hard, play hard, lead by example, be humble in accomplishments, and smile because it makes everyone around you feel good. The Ricky Matter Strength and Conditioning Center was dedicated in his memory on August 21, 2005.
