Buffalo Springs Historical Archeological District preserves the remains of Buffalo Lithia Springs, later called Buffalo Mineral Springs, near Buffalo Springs in southern Virginia. Known since the colonial period and recorded in William Byrd’s 1728 diary during the surveying of the Virginia–North Carolina border, the site had an ordinary and tavern by 1817 and grew into a resort and spa built around its mineral waters. By 1885, its water was bottled and shipped across the United States and to Europe. Buffalo Springs remained a significant gathering place into the early 20th century, despite the loss of part of the original property during Kerr Reservoir construction in the late 1940s.
