Occoneechee State Park is a Virginia state park near Clarksville on Buggs Island Lake, known chiefly as a lakeside recreation area with cabins and yurts, campsites, hiking trails, a splash park, and a marina. Its name preserves the memory of the Occaneechi people, who lived on and traded from an island in the Roanoke River near the Dan River confluence. Their prominence ended in 1676 during Bacon’s Rebellion, a colonial Virginia uprising tied to conflict among Nathaniel Bacon, Governor William Berkeley, and Susquehannock raiders. The island later disappeared beneath the Kerr Lake reservoir created in 1952, linking the park’s modern setting to Native and colonial history.
