The A.J. Read Science Discovery Center of Oneonta is SUNY Oneonta’s hands-on public science museum, created for active exploration through interactive experiments, especially in physics. It grew from the work of physics professor Albert Read, who taught from 1957 to 1985, then designed and installed the center before its dedication on January 21, 1990. Under his direction until 2005, it expanded its exhibits, drew thousands of visitors annually, and became known for practical science activities and community programs. Later leadership and a 2006 state grant broadened outreach, improved exhibits and facilities, and helped sustain its role serving schools, families, and the wider public.
