On the hill overlooking the village stands the Drouillard Mansion, built in 1868-1870 by James Pierre and Mary Florence Drouillard in a Victorian design with a pre-Civil War Italianate style inspired by the summer homes Mary saw during visits to Newport, Rhode Island while attending school in the North. Its frame construction is covered with clapboard siding and includes many distinctive features, including a spiral staircase winding through two and a half stories to the roof, which once had a widow walk and fish pond. The lower sections of the full-length first-floor windows could be raised to cool the ground floor and also served as entrances to the porches. The mansion was the Drouillards' main residence until 1886, when their large brick home in Nashville was finished.
