Montgomery Bell State Park in Burns, Tennessee, spans 3,782 acres of wooded ridges, lakes, and recreation facilities, but its significance extends beyond scenery. Named for iron industrialist Montgomery Bell, it preserves Laurel Furnace, an 1815 ironworks ruin that reflects the region’s early nineteenth-century industrial economy. The land is also the birthplace of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, founded in 1810 in Reverend Samuel McAdow’s log cabin, now represented by a replica and nearby chapel. Developed during the Great Depression through a federal park program and transferred to Tennessee in 1943, the park today combines this industrial and religious history with hiking, fishing, boating, camping, and resort amenities.
