The Bethlehem Plant was an integrated steel facility that took in raw materials harvested from the earth and transformed them into finished products. To make this happen, it had over 150 miles of railroad tracks, more than 1,000 overhead cranes, and 35,000 workers at its peak. The full-size standard-gauge Philadelphia, Bethlehem, and New England Railroad handled shipments to, from, and within the plant, while shorter runs were often made by smaller narrow-gauge trains like the orange locomotive in the park. PBNE trains hauled hot metal cars, nicknamed submarine cars, that transported molten iron, and a fleet of hot metal cars still remains underneath blast furnaces B, C, and D.
