Thomas Barbour was a naturalist, author, and director of the Harvard University Museum whose love and preservation of nature inspired others to keep this place from becoming “that vanishing Eden.” He wrote of boyhood adventures while living in Eau Gallie and exploring this shell mound site, Lake Washington, and the route to the ocean, and later returned with his wife to collect specimens.
