Strawtown Koteewi Park stands in a natural prairie environment along the White River, a place that has long been an ecological and cultural crossroads. The river, once known for its nearly crystal-clear water and earliest documented as Wappi-hanpe, meaning White River, sustained rich woodlands, lush wetlands, and a vast prairie at this site. Drawn by the land's natural abundance, various Native American and European cultures migrated through and settled here over several thousands of years. The park's name honors both the prairie landscape and the Native American people who once occupied the site, with Koteewi, a Miami tribal word for prairie, referring to the large native wildflower and grass prairie once located here, a place more recently known as Strawtown Prairie. Since the land became a Hamilton County Park, its history and diversity have been preserved and restored for present and future generations.
