On September 11, 2001, at 10:03 AM, United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field two miles ahead, shattering the quiet of the Pennsylvania countryside. People who rushed to the scene looked on in disbelief at charred trees and a smoldering crater. Like countless others across the nation, this community was shaken by the crash and by the unimaginable violence and destruction al-Qaeda terrorists brought to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. As the day unfolded, the ordinary field revealed a compelling story of courage and hope. The landscape still hinted at its mining past, and the simple field became the final resting place of the passengers and crew of Flight 93, a lasting testament to the deeds of 40 extraordinary people.
