Wounded Knee Battlefield in South Dakota preserves about 870 acres associated with the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, a deeply traumatic event in the history of the American West. The historic area includes the massacre site itself, the probable locations of the post office and Mousseau's store, and a 1903 monument that is the principal contributing object. Designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1965 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, the site later incorporated Lakota perspectives through consultation and oral histories from descendants. Later buildings and community features remain part of the landscape without overwhelming its historic character.
