South Dundas preserves a long succession of churches across its communities. In Williamsburg, a small Presbyterian church built in 1831 was purchased by Catholics in 1845 and later became the present Catholic church, while an older and the present Presbyterian church, dating to 1873, stood in Dunbar. Williamsburg also had a former Presbyterian church built in 1866 that became the United Church, a first Methodist church from 1797, a larger red brick Methodist church built in 1880 that later became United in Morrisburg, a Holiness church from 1890 behind the Pentecostal church of 1957, and a Christian Reformed church of 1953 that burned in Williamsburg in 1991, followed by a new Christian Reformed church built in 1992. In the distance stood the first Protestant church in Upper Canada, the Lutheran U.E.L. church of 1789-90, also called Zion or Salem Evangelical. In 1811 it was turned over to Anglican use, and after the War of 1812 Lutherans were refused entry in 1814. Later Lutheran churches followed in 1833 and 1863, with the third demolished at the time of the Seaway, and a fourth built in 1957. Anglican churches followed as well, with a second church in 1836 and a third in 1902, built by the J.P. Whitney family as a memorial to their parents, then dismantled with its stones numbered for rebuilding in 1957, when both churches moved to Riverside Heights.
