East Beckwith Mountain is a 12,441-foot summit in Colorado’s West Elk Mountains within the West Elk Wilderness of Gunnison National Forest. Formed about 30 million years ago as a laccolith when magma intruded into Mancos Shale, it was later exposed as softer overlying rock eroded away, leaving its resistant igneous core. It is one of more than a dozen laccoliths in the West Elk and nearby Elk Mountains. The mountain is particularly notable for glacial landforms on its north side, including five cirques divided by sharp arêtes and moraines spreading from its base, and it was historically also known as Mount Beckwith.
