The flat meadowland and bog here are believed to be the site of an ancient lake. Silt deposited from feeder streams filled the lake bed, resulting in rich soil that supports a wide variety of plants. Nearby rock outcrops provide shelter from the weather and are known to have been used for a thousand years or more by roving groups of archaic Indians.
