In East Sioux Falls, quarry workers lived a life of long hours and hard labor as they cut and moved quartzite to meet steady demand. A typical quarryman worked ten hours a day, six days a week, receiving free housing and good pay in return. Stonecutters were paid by output, usually earning 1 to 2 cents per paving block, with good workers making $3 to $6 a day, and one especially skilled stonecutter claimed he could cut 500 paving stones every day for thirty days. The quarrymen were skilled, hard working, and proud of their work. In their free time, they played cricket and soccer, and East Sioux Falls had its own Prairie Rovers cricket team that competed with neighboring towns. On Sundays and especially on the 4th of July, the electric motor line brought Sioux Falls residents to East Sioux Falls to enjoy the park and activities. The work also carried deadly consequences, as years of breathing fine silica dust caused silicosis, locally called stonecutter's consumption, a fatal disease that was sadly common among the young quarrymen of East Sioux Falls.
