Peebles Island State Park lies in the city of Cohoes in Albany County and the village of Waterford in Saratoga County. Surrounded by the third and fourth branches of the Mohawk River, the 191-acre park includes Polrump, Goat, and Peebles Islands as well as the northern portion of Van Schaick Island. New York State purchased Peebles Island in 1973 for use as a park, and the Matton Shipyard on Van Schaick Island was added to the property in 1989. The brick factory complex dates from 1910, when Cluett, Peabody & Company, once the largest shirt manufacturer in the world, began construction of its bleachery.
