Sonnenberg Gardens is a 50-acre historic estate and botanical garden in Canandaigua, New York, whose late-19th-century mansion and formal gardens make it one of the Finger Lakes’ most distinctive landscapes. Purchased in 1863 by Frederick Ferris Thompson and Mary Clark Thompson, the property evolved from a farmhouse and farm into a carefully designed summer retreat, with a Queen Anne mansion, a Roman bath, and major gardens laid out between 1902 and 1919. Its notable features include an important Lord & Burnham conservatory complex, elaborate themed gardens, water features, and specimen trees. After later federal ownership and use alongside a veterans’ hospital, the estate was restored and reopened to the public.
