Established in 1961, the State Arboretum of Utah unites living tree collections across the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City and the 147-acre Red Butte Garden and Arboretum. Spanning about 1,500 acres in all, it is a tree-centered landscape woven through campus and adjoining garden spaces rather than a single enclosed garden. Its collections include more than 7,000 trees representing about 300 species and varieties, with especially strong conifer holdings, including more than 200 taxa and another 1,500 conifers at Red Butte Garden. A 1,100-square-foot conservatory adds more than 400 exotic taxa. Today it serves as both a public garden landscape and a botanical collection of statewide importance.
