Wye Mill, at Wye Mills on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, dates to the late 17th century and is regarded as the oldest continuously operated grist mill in the United States, as well as the Eastern Shore’s earliest industrial site to remain in continuous use. This wood-frame, water-powered mill retains nearly all of its late-18th-century machinery, making it an unusually intact example of early American milling technology. It was also among the first grist mills automated with the Oliver Evans process, and that system still operates there. Its long service, early mechanization, and preserved equipment make it a rare working industrial landmark.
