During World War II, the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Wisconsin constructed twenty-eight diesel electric submarines for the United States Navy, and twenty-five were completed in time to see combat action. Four of the boats were lost at sea and remain on Eternal Patrol. Circa 1943, the Manitowoc Shipyard produced USS Peto, SS 265, the first submarine built by the company. Her keel was laid on June 18, 1941, she was launched on April 30, 1942, and commissioned on November 21, 1942. USS Peto began her first patrol from Brisbane, Australia, on April 2, 1943, and during World War II she completed ten war patrols in the Pacific Ocean, sank seven ships for a total of 29,139 tons, and earned eight Battle Stars.
