Just forward of Hatch #1, Deck Winches 1&2 were used for mooring the forward end of the vessel. To tie up the vessel, deckhands were placed on the dock by the green landing boom and yellow landing chair. A large white wooden block assembly alongside the railing, known as a squash block, was placed between the dock and the ship in case a deckhand fell from the landing chair and overboard, preventing him from being squashed. The Passenger's Hall lay through the double doors opposite the winches.
