When the 4th A.C. reached the Chattahoochee on July 5, attempts to cross were impracticable because of Confederate opposition on the other side. While awaiting the 23d A.C.'s crossing at Soap Cr. on July 8, the 4th A.C. remained in trenches between Rottenwood Cr. to the north and the railroad below Vining’s Station to the south. On July 9, Newton’s 2d division moved north to Roswell to support Garrard’s cavalry. On July 10, Stanley’s 1st and Wood’s 3d divisions moved north to Soap Cr. to join the 23d A.C. After Stoneman’s cavalry returned from a raid below Atlanta, the 14th and 20th Corps crossed at Pace’s Ferry, one-half mile south.
