Tilikum Crossing is a cable-stayed bridge over Portland’s Willamette River linking the South Waterfront and Central Eastside. Built primarily for TriMet’s MAX Orange Line, it also carries buses, the Portland Streetcar, cyclists, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles, while excluding private cars and trucks. Opened on September 12, 2015, it was the first new bridge across the Willamette in metropolitan Portland since 1973 and the first major bridge in the United States designed from the outset for transit, bicycles, and walking rather than general automobile traffic. Its name honors Chinookan peoples, and its lighting system turns river conditions into changing color and motion after dark.
