Portland’s aerial tram links the South Waterfront district with Oregon Health and Science University’s main campus on Marquam Hill, providing a fast alternative to the longer road climb. Opened in 2006 and to the public in 2007, it is one of only two commuter aerial tramways in the United States. Built to serve OHSU’s expansion after its 2001 land purchase, the system was shaped by steep terrain and hospital needs, including vibration control and strong safety features. Though widely used and integrated into the city’s transit network, it was controversial because its final cost rose far above early estimates. Today it remains both a practical commuter route and a distinctive Portland landmark.
