Shoshone Cavern National Monument in Wyoming centered on a cave high on Cedar Mountain near Cody along the Shoshone River. President William Howard Taft established it on September 21, 1909, to protect 210 acres around a cavern that runs about 2,500 feet into the mountain. The cave was notable for crystal incrustations and dripping formations, mostly white with some brownish and reddish coloring. The monument was abolished on March 17, 1954, by the 83rd Congress, and the site passed to the city of Cody. By 2008, the cavern was again under federal ownership, administered by the Bureau of Land Management as Spirit Mountain Cave, with controlled access by permit.
