Engineers building the Pacific Coast Highway in the early 1930s faced an unusual challenge at Cape Creek, a deep, offset gorge carved over thousands of years by the sea and the creek. State Bridge Engineer Conde B. McCullough met that challenge by combining old and new technology in the Cape Creek Bridge, whose design resembled Roman aqueducts with two lower viaduct sections supporting a taller, open-spandrel deck arch. In this Roman-inspired design, he used the cutting-edge technology of steel-reinforced concrete.
