At Rohwer, Arkansas, during 1941-45, Nisei internees Sam Nakamoto and Mary Tsukamoto urged that children learn that even after losing many material things, courage, fortitude, and the ability to do the best with the least remained. They reflected that, though their experience lacked the glory associated with battlefields and the American home front, their path must rise silently, quietly, and unfalteringly. They called for awakening in young hearts a meaning and purpose of life, guiding their growth toward a broader outlook so that, despite discrimination, humiliation, and disastrous years taken from their lives, this experience would become not a failure but a tremendous force for building an enduring generation of finer Americans.
