Czech and Moravian settlers who arrived here in the early 1880s first worshiped in one another's homes or traveled 12 miles to Taylor to reach the nearest Catholic church. As their congregation and the community of Granger grew, they erected a wood-frame sanctuary in 1891 on land donated by Austinite W. H. Walton and dedicated it to the Czech patron saints Cyril and Methodius. During the brief pastorate of the Rev. Frantisek Machan, the church organized several fraternal groups and established a school. His successor, the Rev. Frantisek Pridal, helped the congregation build a new school building and parish hall in 1912 and replace the original church with a brick structure in 1916. After Father Pridal's death in 1927, the Rev. John Vanicek became pastor, helping many young parishioners enter the priesthood and sisterhood and guiding others into leadership in statewide Catholic fraternal organizations. In 1948 the church became part of the newly formed Austin Diocese, and additional buildings followed with a two-story brick school in 1947, a recreation center in 1959, and a brick convent in 1960. The church has continued to play an integral role in religious and community life.
