In a railroad accident near Shohola, Pennsylvania, on July 15, 1864, Union guards and Confederate prisoners of war were killed together. The Union dead were privates of the Eleventh Veteran Reserve Corps comprising the guard, and their unidentified remains, together with those of the Confederate prisoners, were removed to this cemetery. The Confederate dead numbered forty-nine soldiers who were killed while prisoners of war; they were first buried near Shohola and later removed here, where the individual graves cannot now be identified.
