Captain Atoka, born about 1792 and dead during the Civil War, signed the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830 and led a band of Choctaws to this area, settling near Crystal in 1834. He was a noted athlete, a Choctaw subchief, and a respected leader. Atoka County and the city of Atoka were named in his honor.
