Early in 1862, Gen. Albert Pike, C.S.A., constructed earthworks 1.5 mi. S.E. as a major Confederate stronghold in southern Indian Territory. The fort was named for Gen. Ben McCulloch, who fell at Pea Ridge. It had 18 pieces of artillery, and 3,000 soldiers garrisoned there. Pike was shortly relieved of command, and the post was abandoned. He then devoted years to Masonry.
