Santa Fe Baldy, called Póvi Pʼin in Tewa, is a prominent Sangre de Cristo summit in the Pecos Wilderness northeast of Santa Fe and the highest mountain farther south in New Mexico. It stands on the divide between waters flowing to the Rio Grande and the Pecos River and is especially visible from Los Alamos and Rio Grande communities. Its unusually high tree line leaves only the upper slopes above trees year-round, though fire-scarred areas and autumn aspens make it a striking landmark. Lake Katherine lies in a cirque on its eastern side, and the mountain is a popular hiking destination whose modern history also includes a fatal helicopter rescue in June 2009.
