South Truchas Peak in New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo range rises 13,102 feet, making it the state’s second highest summit after Wheeler Peak. Part of a compact four-summit massif in the Pecos Wilderness and Santa Fe National Forest, it is the highest of the Truchas group and the southernmost point in the contiguous United States above 13,000 feet. The mountain stands on the divide between the Rio Grande and Pecos River watersheds, with runoff feeding several regional streams. Known for its remote wilderness character, Truchas is reached by long trails, including Skyline Trail 251, and remains one of New Mexico’s most serious and secluded mountain objectives.
