Kansas Landscape Arboretum in Wakefield, Kansas, is a 193-acre nonprofit arboretum developed as both a botanical garden and a natural setting for quiet walking. The idea had been discussed for decades before federal support tied to the Milford Reservoir project made it possible. Incorporated in 1969 and leased from the United States Army Corps of Engineers in 1972, the arboretum was established largely through the efforts of Ernest Bauer, L. R. Quinlan, and Bill Flynn. From an initial 24 plant varieties, it grew to about 1,000 species of native and exotic woody plants, with trails, a Memorial Tree Walk, bird-watching areas, and views of Milford Lake.
