Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument in Texas preserves a long-used quarrying landscape on the red bluffs above the Canadian River, where people obtained prized Alibates flint for thousands of years. This distinctive, rainbow-hued stone lay close to the surface and was extracted from relatively small pits, yet it was traded widely across the Great Plains and beyond. The quarries were used as early as the Clovis culture during the Ice Age and later by the Antelope Creek people between 1200 and 1450 AD, whose stone-slabbed, multiroom houses also drew attention to the area. Protected since 1965, the site remains carefully managed with limited access.
