Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park in Dania Beach is a Florida Atlantic coast park whose history is tied to segregation and civil rights. Opened in 1953, it was Broward County’s first beach open to African Americans, though it began as an isolated, poorly equipped site known as the “Colored Beach” and was not reached by road until 1965. Its creation followed years of advocacy by Dr. Von D. Mizell and others. Mizell and Eula Johnson later helped desegregate Broward County’s beaches through Fort Lauderdale wade-ins in 1961, and the park was renamed in their honor in 2016.
