Cumberland Covered Bridge, also called the Matthews Covered Bridge and originally the New Cumberland Covered Bridge, spans the Mississinewa River at Matthews in Jefferson Township, Indiana. Built in 1877 by William Parks of Marion, this 181-foot Howe truss bridge became inseparable from the river’s flooding history. In 1913, floodwaters lifted it and carried it about half a mile downstream before it was hauled back on rollers by horses and set on foundations raised three feet. Another major flood in 1958 caused only minor damage. As Grant County’s only remaining covered bridge, it gained recognition as a preserved historic engineering work and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
