Completed in 1881 and originally named Lincoln Mills, the mill struggled to be successful until S. H. Baughman purchased it in 1892. Joined by his brothers, Jim and John, and brother-in-law Walter McKinney, he formed J. H. Baughman and Co. The mill ground grain into flour, meal, and feed for livestock, and it operated until John Baughman, Jr. retired in 1969. It contains logs from Kentucky's first steam mill, Buffalo Mill, circa 1848, and from its location above Main Street it has long stood as a dominant figure in town. Its piercing whistle once served as a signal for miles around Stanford, letting workers, farmers, and townspeople know it was time for a meal.
