Born in Washington on Feb. 16, 1840, while his father, Harvey Magee Watterson, was in Congress, Henry Watterson spent most of his boyhood in a house 100 ft. west. Later a Confederate soldier, journalist, and political leader, he founded the Louisville Courier-Journal in 1868 and served as its editor in chief until 1918. He died in 1921.
