The first public high school for African Americans in Calvert County opened in 1938 and served until desegregation in 1966. It was named for William Sampson Brooks (1865–1934), who was born in Calvert County and became an advocate of education, the 44th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the author of accounts of his missionary travels in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
