New Hance Trail
Nature
New Hance Trail, also called Red Canyon Trail, is a remote South Rim route in Arizona that descends about 6.5 miles from roughly 7,040 feet to Hance Rapids on the Colorado River at about 2,600 feet. Created in the 1890s by early Grand Canyon figure John Hance, it is considered one of the South Rim’s unmaintained and most difficult trails, especially in its steep, rough upper mile. Though once marked mainly by cairns, it has become a clear single-track path with engineered switchbacks. Use remains low, mostly by well-prepared overnight hikers, and there is no reliable water between rim and river.
