Beginning in 1821, both the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails crossed here from northeast to southwest before taking separate courses farther west. In the 1830's, after the founding of Westport, Missouri, a route through Kansas Territory was opened north of here. Long after that became the main route, this route continued in use by pioneers and tradesmen out of Independence, Missouri.
