In 1849 the spring was called Mescalero Spring, when it watered corn and peaches of the Mescalero Apaches. To Fort Davis soldiers in 1856 it was Head Spring. Its present name was given by the first permanent settlers, Mexican farmers. In 1871 Miller, Lyles, and Murphy began large-scale commercial irrigation, and Murphy built the first canals.
