On July 25, 1863, Confederate troops under Gen. John H. Morgan passed Updegraff's Mills, then located here, and proceeded northward by way of Dry Fork Valley and Smithfield while being pursued by Gen. James M. Shackleford with the 14th Illinois Cavalry, First Kentucky Cavalry, 9th Michigan Cavalry, 11th Michigan Battery, 86th Ohio Mounted Infantry, and 2d Tennessee Mounted Infantry.
