Mojave encompasses a 1.6-million-acre park with singing sand dunes, cinder cone volcanoes, the largest Joshua tree forest, and carpets of spring wildflowers. Its canyons, mountains, and mesas contain long-abandoned mines, homesteads, and rock-walled military outposts. Located between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, it offers serenity and solitude away from major metropolitan areas. The Mojave Desert changes with the seasons, bringing winter freezing temperatures, strong winds, and rain and snow in the mountains; spring wildflowers with enough moisture; summer heat with temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and travel to higher elevations such as Mid-Hills and the New York Mountains; and cooler fall temperatures that mark hunting season.
