In August 1857, a small band of hardy pioneers found a spring of cool, clear water near this spot. Abundant drinking water was a strong factor in the search for a place to settle. They soon agreed that they had indeed found an ideal place and laid claim to the area for the town site, which they chose to name Eureka.
