In 1877, Burton Village merchants purchased this ten-pound Parrott gun from the War Department in Washington, D.C. The cannon is said to have been fired at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, during the Civil War. It was fired in March 1877 to celebrate the inauguration of Rutherford B. Hayes as the 19th President of the United States. In 1880, it was fired in celebration of the presidential nomination of James A. Garfield, who became the 20th President of the United States. The cannon was fired again in 1931 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Garfield's birth and was dedicated on May 25, 2009, to honor the valor and bravery of all veterans.
