Southern University was established in 1880 under an 1879 constitutional mandate to educate "persons of color." Originally located in New Orleans, it was one of the first colleges for blacks to receive federal land scrip funds for agriculture and mechanical courses. In 1914 it was moved to this site and reopened with Dr. Joseph Samuel Clark as president.
