Hugh Torance was a pioneer, patriot, and businessman who founded the Hugh Torance House and Store from 1805 to 1825, the oldest standing store in the state. Between 1831 and 1833, his son James built Cedar Grove, one of the finest examples of a piedmont plantation in North Carolina.
