Confederate soldiers fought and died defending the bridge crossing at the Edisto River against Gen. Sherman’s troops on February 12, 1865. Confederate troops present at the battle were Kannapaux’s S.C. Battery, Stovall’s Brigade, Pettus’s Brigade, and Lt. Gen. Stephen D. Lee’s Corps, Army of Tennessee.
